Welcome to SpA Academy

Patients deserve uniform access to expert care. Following the success of the East of England SpA Academy, formed in 2017, the SpA Academy has been established to raise clinical standards and promote multidisciplinary care, generate interest and provide an overarching strategy for SpA learning.

The curriculum includes all aspects of Spondyloarthritis with a major focus on axial spondyloarthritis and psoriatic arthritis. Topics will include epidemiology, immunology,  disease presentation and classification, clinical examination, investigation, imaging, non-pharmacological and pharmacological management, and service delivery.

The SpA Academy also serves as a platform for multi-disciplinary team networking, and we have been pleased to welcome rheumatologists, clinical and research nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, pharmacists, dieticians, psychologists, chiropractors, osteopaths, podiatrists, surgeons and general practitioners. Patients and patient support organisations will work in collaboration with the faculty

Event Updates

As you know, following our successful first event in Stirling, we had to cancel the remaining three face-to-face SpA Academy Scotland events, but we are pleased to advise that we have re-organised these events to be held online, facilitated by our colleagues at Global Healthcare Media:

There are also two other virtual meetings scheduled for the below dates.  These have the same programme so just pick which date is convenient:

Please click on the links above for event programmes

For these two events we are delighted to announce our Case Presentation Competition, and invite submissions from all.  The prizes are £250 for the winner and £100 each for the other three selected for oral presentation.

These can be in the form of case reports, audits, service developments or original research.  The best four will be selected for presentation.  Submissions should be emailed to administrator@spaacademy.org by the deadline of 18thSeptember (see guidelines below) and winners will be notified shortly thereafter.

Submission Guidelines

Please read the following instructions carefully before submitting your abstract or case submission(s)

  • Please state clearly which event you are attending – East of England or London
  • Submissions must be written in English not exceeding 300 words
  • The uploaded Word file(s) must contain Title, authors & affiliations.  Type family name first followed by the initials of the first name of the authors (Smith J.A, etc.)
  • Research and Service Development/Audit abstracts should be structured as follows: Background, Aims, Methods, Results, Conclusions.
  • Use font Arial 10 characters per inch (font size 10) is preferred. No more than one table and one figure per abstract is permitted.

Prize £250 for the winner and £100 each for the other three selected for presentation

We appreciate the difficulties many of you face with disruptions to work schedules, reassigned roles or furlough, and possible difficulties obtaining study leave.  As such, our online events will all be accessible for one month, and CPD points will be available.  We will be using a mixture of pre-recorded lectures, with Faculty on hand on each date for live Q&A between each session.

We would like to thank those of you who attended the inaugural event on 5th March.  I hope you agree it was a useful and enjoyable day, and the feedback we have received is both positive and complimentary.

To register for any (or all) of the meetings, please register online or email Karly at administrator@spaacademy.org or use our contact form and you will be sent log-in details nearer the time.

  • I have thoroughly enjoyed the SpA academy days that I attended. It consolidated my knowledge of Axial SpA and is a fantastic forum to network with clinicians and the multi-disciplinary team across the region . This forum has given me confidence and insight on how to modulate my service needs for patients in my local area. Thank you for all your time and efforts and being truly inspirational.

  • I found the Spa academy meeting extremely useful not only in terms of the presentations but also having the opportunity to meet with other clinicians with a special interest in SpA. I have done several feedback sessions to my colleagues and as a result it has helped to heighten awareness of SpA as a possible diagnosis.

  • All the events were extremely useful. I work in a large primary care MSK service, taking all referrals, primarily from GPs. The [training] days have definitely changed my practice on an individual level as an ESP as well as within our wider team of ESPs and physios. Training has been put in place as a result of attendance at the 4 days and will be ongoing. I would like to think there is now an improved awareness throughout our service - it certainly seems to have prompted more discussion amongst colleagues. In addition we are starting an audit of GP spinal referrals with reference to the recent NICE guidance on spondyloarthritis. I hope this will also help to improve awareness amongst GPs too. We are also developing more links with Rheumatology and are lucky to be able to have the opportunity to work alongside as they have recently moved some of their clinics out into primary care. Looking forward to further SpA events and updates very much, its definitely worth the long drive down and a lovely venue. The website will be very useful

  • I found the events very interesting and useful. It is especially useful to have access to local, quality CPD hours. As a manual therapist I found the event at the N&N which was aimed at chiropractors and osteopaths very informative. I had under-appreciated the episodic nature of SpA and I feel more confident referring patients back to their GP for further investigations. I am pleased to report that in this short time a couple of people have received a diagnosis of SpA when they would have almost certainly slipped the net previously.

    Norwich Osteopath
  • I attended the day in September 2017 - there were very interesting case presentations and then discussion on care pathways. The venue was excellent and the day very informative . It highlighted the need to be vigilant in detecting SpA.
    Norfolk Meeting
    Norfolk Rheumatology Associate Specialist
  • I attended the meeting at Newmarket and one before that at the NNUH. I found them both really interesting, very informative and I have referred at least two patients on for investigation, advised one patient that there may have been advances in treatment since her diagnosis and am definitely more on the look-out for symptoms of SpA.
